Lack of freedom and Fear; Ailing Tamil Nadu Police against Jihad

Sunday, 05 July 2015 00:00 Written by  பி.ஆர்.ஹரன் font size decrease font size decrease font size increase font size increase font size

Vellore District has a considerable Muslim population, particularly in Ambur and Vaniyambadi towns, where they are predominant. Although most of them are connected to Leather Industry, they also do all kinds of businesses. They are also politically strong in the sense that their votes only decide the outcome of an election. This is the main reason for the political parties to choose only Muslims as their candidates and they also go to any level to satisfy the Muslim community.

On the night of Saturday 27 June 2015, the Muslims of Ambur indulged in an unprecedented violence on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway and connected roads. The violence was targeted against the police force which resulted in more than 50 police personnel  and equal number of general public (mainly Bus passengers) getting badly hurt, some of them severely, and destruction of more than Rs.10 crores of public property.

Violence and its cause

The violence erupted due to the death of a 26 years old youth by name Shameel Ahmed, allegedly due to torture by police in illegal custody. Shameel Ahmed, hailing from a place called Pallikonda, was working in a Leather manufacturing company in Ambur, where in, he had reportedly developed an illicit relationship with a 23 years old Hindu Dalit lady by name Pavitra, who is married to one Palani and has a child through him. As the management got wind of their illicit relationship, both of them were dismissed from service.

Later Shameel Ahmed managed to get a job in Erode. He made Pavitra to visit Erode and stay with him. Pavitra had reportedly joined him on 13 June.
Pavitra’s husband Palani, after finding his wife missing, filed a complaint in Pallikonda Police Station against Shamel Ahmed saying that he had kidnapped Pavitra. But, Shameel Ahmed claimed that he had sent Pavitra back to Pallikonda and that he had conveyed the same to her family. However, she had not returned yet.

So, based on Palani’s complaint Pallikonda police took Shameel Ahmed for interrogation on 15 June. After the police sent him back home after interrogation, he had developed some ailments and subsequently was admitted to government hospital in Ambur. Later he was shifted to Vellore government hospital and as his conditions reportedly worsened he was shifted to Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital, Chennai, where he died on Friday 26 June.

The victim’s family claims that Shameel Ahmed was illegally detained by the police for four days from 15 to 19 June in a private place and was tortured brutally, and subsequently he developed lot of complications and finally died without responding to treatment. They squarely blame the police for his death.  However, the police have refuted this.

As the news about the death of Shameel Ahmed arrived, the Muslims reportedly got permission from the police to take his body in a procession for burial. However, more than 500 Muslims have gathered in strength and stormed the Ambur Policde station demanding the immediate arrest of Inspector Martin and other Constables who were involved in the alleged torturing of Shameel Ahmed.  They also made a demand that a murder case has to be filed against those police personnel.

Assuring them of necessary action and based on the complaint given by Shameel Ahmed’s family, the police registered cases against Inspector Martin Premraj, Special Sub-Inspector Sabarathnam, Constables Nagaraj, Aiyappan, Murali, Suresh and Muniyan under Section 176(1) of the Cr.PC and placed them under suspension. First Divisional Magistrate Justice Sivakadatcham also ordered a Judicial Enquiry.

In spite of the fact that the Police and Judiciary have taken necessary actions, the Muslim organisations persisted with their demand of arresting the concerned police personnel and slapping murder case on them and also resorted to violence. In spite of the fact that the Police and Judiciary have taken necessary actions, the Muslim organisations persisted with their demand of arresting the concerned police personnel and slapping murder case on them and also resorted to violence. In spite of the fact that the Police and Judiciary have taken necessary actions, the Muslim organisations persisted with their demand of arresting the concerned police personnel and slapping murder case on them and also resorted to violence.

Hundreds of Muslims wreaked havoc on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway and brought the entire traffic to a standstill. They stoned the buses, trucks, cars and even two wheelers and damaged the nearby buildings too.  Even while additional police were brought in, the Musims swelled in thousands (more than 3000 as per media reports) and indulged in attacks, violence and arson. They burnt down one van, one mini bus, four two wheelers, two police jeeps and also a TASMAC wine shop..

They ransacked the nearby buildings including two private clinics and Ambur Town police station. Nearby places like Nellikollai have also witnessed violence.

Even while a considerable Police force led by Deputy Inspector General Thamizhchandran, Superintendent of Police Senthilkumari, Deputy Superintendents of Police Ganesan and Vijayakumar tried their might to control the violent Muslims, activists belonging to Islamic fundamentalist organisations started assaulting the police personnel violently, in which, more than 50 police personnel including Superintendent of Police Senthilkumari and 15 other policewomen were terribly injured and later hospitalised. Hundreds of police personnel were seen running for cover. Apart from sharp stones, Blades, Surgical blades and knifes were also used by Muslims.

A Planned Attack?

Aslam Bash

The local MLA Aslam Basha belongs to Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) which is the political face of the fundamentalist organisation Tamilnadu Muslim Munetra Kazhagam (TMMK).  He has reportedly instigated the mob to indulge in violence and arson. Although he has refuted the allegations levelled against him, reports indicate that Muslims traders have been asked to down their shutters as early as 7.30 pm.

Also sources say that Muslim youth from outside were brought in a day earlier and accommodated by the local fundamentalist organisations. It is also said that a section of those youth were teenagers, who acted in a similar fashion one can find in Kashmir and Palestine, pelting stones at police and security forces.   Hence, the police is investigating whether the violent attack was a pre-planned one. Meanwhile the demand for the arrest of MLA Aslam Basha under National Security Act has come vociferously from BJP and various Hindu organsations.

Illicit Relationship or Love Jihad?

“Love Jihad, a campaign of enticing and trapping Non-Muslim girls into love, marriage and conversion, is real and happening across the country. It is happening in Tamil Nadu too. Some of the fundamentalist organisations train their youth to indulge in Love Jihad, which is more prevalent in districts like Vellore, Dindukkal, Nagapatinam, etc. They focus not only on unmarried girls but also on young married girls. There is every possibility that the same strategy could have been adopted by Shameel Ahmed and the same is suspected by Hindu organisations.
Pavithra belongs to Hindu Dalit community. She is also a mother of a child. In spite of that, he has had the guts to trap her, develop a relationship with her, take her to Erode and make her stay with him. And more than everything he also had the audacity to call her family and tell that he had sent her back to Pallikonda. This clearly points to the fact that there is a strong communal organisational force behind him. He was also the local head of Indian Tauheed Jamath. It is also pertinent and important to note that Pavithra has still not reached her home.

Hence, it becomes all the more important to investigate whether the Shameel-Pavithra affair was an illicit relationship or a case of Love-Jihad, and whether Pavithra is still alive or dead, and if dead, how.

Post-Violence Scenario

The police could identify and arrest only 95 persons from the thousands of Muslims who have indulged in violence. Although 150 to 200 people were arrested initially, due to the interference and influence of Aslam Basha the police have released most of them and finally detained only 95 people, who have been sent to Vellore, Cuddalore and Salem prisons.
The police have also allowed the fundamentalist organisation Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam to serve special Mutton Biriyani for all those 95 culprits inside the prison itself.

The police have formed two separate squads to find out the whereabouts of Pavithra. The Revenue Department has formed four teams of officials to investigate the loss occurred due to the destruction of public properties. Also, the Divisional Magistrate Justice S. Sivakatatcham has ordered an enquiry by the Judicial Magistrate.

Meanwhile a fanatic group called ‘Facebook Muslim Media’ has reported in its timeline that,
A Conglomeration of 24 Muslim Political Parties and organisations have met the Director General of Police in Chennai and submitted a memorandum listing their various demands. The team included its convener Mohammed Hanifa, K.K.S.M. Thekalan Bhagavi – State President of SDPI (Social Democratic Party of India), Mohammed Ismail - State President of Popular Front of India, S.N.Sikkandar – State President of Welfare Party and Dharvesh Rashadhi – Chennai District President of Jamath-ul-Ulema. Apart from Director General of Police Ashok Kumar, Inspector General (Intelligence) Kannan, Deputy Inspector General Ishvaran and Superintendent of Police Arularasu also took part in the meeting.
The Muslim leaders submitted the memorandum with the following demands:

  • Inspector Martin and other police personnel of Pallikonda Police station who have tortured Shameel Ahmed and caused his death must be arrested under Section 302 and a murder case must be slapped on them.
  • The family of Shameel Ahmed must be given a solatium of Rs.20 lacs.
  • Departmental action must be taken against those police officers who lathi charged the general public in Ambur.
  • All those general public who were arrested must be released immediately
  • Above actions must be taken immediately so as to remove the fear from the minds of the general public and prevalence of peace in Ambur.

It would be appropriate to note here that in the demands submitted by the Muslim organisations, the term “General Public” has been deliberately used in place of “Muslims”. It is clearly a ploy to project a scenario that the general public have supported Muslims and indulged in violence themselves and also to escape from the law in the name of general public.

Hindu Munnani Founder President Sri Ramagopalan, in his statement on the violence had warned, “If people are driven to a situation of protecting themselves, if police themselves do not have security and protection, then the consequences would be disastrous” and demanded that, “those who have instigated the violence, those who have spread it, those who have led the violence and those who have indulged in it must all be brought to book and the government must initiate severe actions against them.”

Bharatiya Janatha Party, Hindu Makkal Katchi and other Hindu organisations have demanded the arrest of Member of Legislative Assembly from Ambur, Aslam Basha under National Security Act.

Attacks on Police by Muslim fundamentalists is not new to Tamil Nadu.

Muslim fundamentalists indulging in attacking the police and security forces is not new to the state and it has been going on for years.
On 29 November 1997 Traffic Constable Selvaraj was murdered by three Al Umma activists in broad daylight, for the reason that he charged them for driving without a driving license.

In the 18 months earlier to the said incident, four policemen were murdered by Islamic fundamentalists in Coimbatore and Madurai including Jailer S.Jayaprakash of Central Jail, Madurai and Warder G.Boopalan of Central Prison Coimbatore. Such incidents have been going on.

Hence, the Muslim fundamentalists indulging in violent attacks against police force has been going on for years in Tamilnadu.

Support from successive Governments and Political Parties

Since independence, a peculiar form of ‘Secularism’ is being followed in India. Almost all the political parties have been following Nehruvian Secularism, which is nothing but a policy of pandering to minorities at the cost of the interest of majority community. As a result, all the political parties have been vying with each other to get the support of minorities by going to any extent to satisfy them.

Enjoying the total surrender of political parties, the minorities have been getting their things done easily. This vote bank politics being practiced by the political parties have made the minorities audacious and utilising the weakness of politicians for vote banks and their selfishness, they have encroached in almost all fields of activities. They made the governments to take major policy decisions favouring them. The political parties and also the successive governments formed by them continue their vote bank politics of favouring the minorities against the interest of the majority community in the name of secularism. This dishonest and unscrupulous politics is being practiced across the nation in all states.

This has resulted in the indulgence of atrocious activities by the minority fundamentalist organisations giving scant regard to the law of the land. They have also developed an audacious feeling that the establishment would not take any action against them.

As a consequence, Religious Conversions, Encroachment of Territory and Terrorist activities have increased in leaps and bounds all over the country including Tamil Nadu. In fact, it is on the higher side in Tamil Nadu than many other states, because of the deliberate anti-Hindu politics being indulged in the Dravidian parties. The alarming and steadfast increase in Christian Conversions and Islamic Fundamentalism are clear evidences for the 48 years of blatant vote bank politics and appeasement policies being deliberately undertaken by the successive DMK and AIADMK governments and other pseudo-secular parties of Tamil Nadu.

The Ambur violence must be seen in this background only.

Extremist Organisations in Tamil Nadu

There has been a surge in the growth of Jihadi elements in Tamil Nadu in the last two decades. When a countrywide ban was enforced on SIMI the Tamil Nadu unit took the avatars of “Al Umma” and “Jihad Committee” and Al Umma made its first major strike at the RSS HQs in Chennai in November 1993, killing 11 swayamsevaks.
The Jihad Committee, which has been regularly indulging in communal riots in the state, got disintegrated when its leader Palani Baba was murdered. Thereafter the TMMK (Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazagham) was launched in 1995. It was founded by Hyder Ali, a SIMI activist and former associate of Palani Baba in the Jihad Committee, who left Al Umma after a tiff with its president Basha. Jawahirullah, another SIMI activist also joined him.

When Al Umma was banned for the Coimbatore blasts in February 1998, it changed colour as “Manitha Neethi Pasrai” (MNP). Thus, neither the banning of SIMI and Al Umma, nor disintegration of the Jihad Committee, reduced Islamic fundamentalism in the state. In fact, it started growing in different avatars with the support of Dravidian parties, which go to any extent for the sake of vote banks. At present in the state there are 24 Islamic Extremist Organisations including recent additions such as Popular Front of India (PFI), Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Tamil Nadu Tauheed Jamath and Indian Tauheed Jamath, etc.

Recent Incidents

In the last two years, especially after the victory of MMK in two assembly constituencies with the help of AIADMK’s alliance, Islamic aggression has obviously increased in manifolds. The AIADMK government has turned a blind eye and remains a mute spectator, having vote banks in its mind. A look at the recent incidents will be in order:

28 October 2011: A pipe bomb was planted enroute BJP leader L.K.Advani’s yatra between Thirumangalam and Srivilliputhur. The investigation has been very slow and tardy.

25 June 2012: State Intelligence and local police busted a training camp secretly held by Muslims in Ramanathapuram. 30 youth from Assam, Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu were detained and later let free. The name of the organization and the reasons for youths coming from far off places and the secret nature of the camp were kept secret by the police for reasons known only to them.

Between 14 and 18 September 2012, Muslim outfits mobilized thousands of people including women and children, and hit the arterial roads (Mount road and Cathedral Road) close to American Consulate, in the guise of protesting against the English movie ‘Innocence of Muslims’. The crowd indulged in violence and American Consulate was attacked; vehicles were stoned and police too were not spared. The entire stretch of Mount road was used as a place for Namaz and the violent protests went on continuously for four days. First time in the history of this country the American Consulate remained closed for four days. The AIADMK government did not take any action against the hooligans, but instead, found a scapegoat in the Chennai Commissioner of Police and transferred him to another position.

23 October 2012: Dr. Aravind Reddy, Secretary BJP Medical Wing was murdered in Vellore. Though initial arrests were made by police citing enmity due to Real Estate businesses, it has come out now that he was murdered by Jihadis.

26 October 2012: BJP National Executive Committee member H. Raja was attacked in Illayangudi, a Muslim dominated area.

6 November 2012: R.S.S Tiruppur District Secretary Anandan was severely assaulted in Mettupalayam near Coimbatore.

Between 19 and 22 December 2012, Tamil Nadu Touheed Jamath issued handbills in Triplicane area with irreverent comments on Saint Ramalinga Vllalar. Members of the Hindu organisations lodged a complaint with the Zambazar police and the police booked a case against the complainant under non-bailable sections, while the accused Muslim was booked under bailable section after a gang of Muslims besieged the police station. A police officer justified this action by saying that if a Muslim is arrested they would mob the station in hundreds!

January 2013: Vishwaroopam, a Tamil movie produced by actor Kamal Hassan faced the ire of Islamists. Though the movie talked only about Taliban and their terror acts, 24 Islamic outfits again hit the streets and protested against the release of the film. In an act of appeasement, the government imposed a temporary ban. The chief minister even conceded through a special press meet that she couldn’t provide security to all 524 cinema theatres and that the government would facilitate the negotiation between Kamal Hassan and the Islamic outfits. She made a special mention about the Jihadi outfit “Tamil Nadu Tauheed Jamath”, saying that the outfit with seven and a half lac members is a pan Indian organisation. As a token of appreciation, Islamists welcomed her statement by pelting stones and throwing petrol bombs at some theatres in the state. No arrest was made in this regard too and again police remained silent presumably under the orders of the government.

19 March 2013: A BJP functionary by name Murugan was murdered in Paramakudi.

15 April 2013: Hindu Munnani functionary Manjunath was grievously attacked in Coonoor. Five TMMK cadres were arrested.

17 April 2013: Hindu Munnani functionaries Hariharan, Venkatraj and Jayakumar were attacked by Muslims while pasting posters condemning the attack on Manjunath in Coonoor. 10 TMMK cadres were arrested.

21 April 2013: Senior BJP leader M.R. Gandhi was attacked in Nagercoil

15 May 2013: In another act of appeasement, the government announced that Memorials for Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan would be constructed in memory of their fight against British. While history clearly depicts them as “foreign invaders” like the British, it is rather astonishing that the Tamil Nadu government treats them as “freedom fighters”.

May 2013: Seeman president of a Tamil separatist outfit by name “Nam Thamizhar” brought Kashmir separatist leader Yasin Malik to Chennai for rendering a special address during a public meeting organized in Cuddalore in memory of LTTE’s defeat. He even approached the Chennai High Court and obtained permission for the event and until then the state government was not even aware of the visit of Yasin Malik. Waking up at the eleventh hour, the state government banned the public meeting. However, the event was held inside a marriage hall and Yasin Malik and Seeman addressed the gathering and they were allowed to escape. No case was registered against both of them despite their anti-national ranting. This is yet another case of government yielding to Islamic and Tamil separatists just for the sake of vote banks.

1 July 2013: State Secretary of Hindu Munnani Vellaiyappan was murdered by Islamic Terrorists in broad day light in Vellore.

6 July 2013: Muslims assembled in thousands and went on a rally without permission to the Secretariat violating the ban order, demanding enhancement of reservation from 3.5% to 7.5%., exemption for Muslims from Tamilnadu Marriage Registration Act 2009 and release of Muslim prisoners who served more than 10 years in jail. The city came to a standstill for a few hours and even though the police stalled their march and dispersed them, no legal action was taken against them.

19 July 2013: BJP state general secretary auditor Ramesh was murdered in Salem.
After an uproar from Hindus across the state in the aftermath of several murders of Hindu activists and leaders, the AIADMK government was forced to speed up the investigation and finally the police were able to apprehend three terrorists Police Fakrudhin, Panna Ismail and Bilal Malik who were involved in many of these terror acts and murders. However, the other activists who were supposed to have aided them, have not been apprehended so far. Those absconding are also suspected for their involvement in the bomb blast at BJP office in Bengaluru.

19 June 2014: The capture of the three terrorists notwithstanding, Hindu Munnani functionary (President-North Chennai) was murdered by Jihadis.

Very recently in October 2014, in a place called S.P.Pattinam in Ramanathapuram district, when the local sub inspector Kalidas was attacked by an extremist by name Saiyed with a knife, he opened fire in self-defence resulting in his death. Syed was reportedly an extremist indulging in illegal activities. However, yielding to the pressure from Islamic organisations the AIADMK government had slapped a murder case on Sub Inspector Kalidas and also sanctioned a solatium of Rs.5 Lac to the extremist’s family.

A Weak Police Force doesn’t augur well for the Security of the State

When we analyse the Ambur violence in the backdrop of the above said incidents, we could clearly infer certain blatant facts:

  • Emboldened by the vote bank chasing and minority appeasing mentality and the lackadaisical attitude of the political parties the Muslims have become audacious to go to any extent to achieve their objectives.
  • The have developed a mindset of showing their numerical strength even for petty issues and indulging in huge protests in order to threaten the police and government.
  • Government (both DMK and AIADMK) doesn’t give enough freedom to the police to crackdown on extremist elements. They give oral orders to police and pressurise them not to take any legal actions against Islamic fundamentalists. This has been happening for the past many years and as a result, the police force has become weak and spineless without freedom.
  • Even if some officers take or attempt to take legal actions against the Islamic fundamentalist organisations and activists, they are either transferred or subjected to enquiry or arrested. Because of such wrong actions by the government, the police prefer to remain as mute spectators without taking any action against the Muslim fundamentalists.
  • The protest by Muslims has taken new dimensions over a period of time. The Ambur violence is a clear indication of how they have evolved in the usage of weapons. Teenagers have been roped in to indulge in stone pelting targeting police and public property. Normally this kind of practice is seen in Kashmir where the separatists involve teenagers in stone pelting. The practice has its origin in Palestine. Such a strategy was seen in Ambur, which is the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu. Apart from stones, they have also used blades, Surgical Blades, Knifes and wooden logs. It is pertinent to note that surgical blades are normally used by Jihadis in Kerala. The same has come to practice in Tamil Nadu.
  • Employing jihadis from outside (outside area or outside state) to execute crimes (either violence or murder) is the latest strategy being adopted in Tamil Nadu by the Jihadis. As per source, in the Ambur violence too, jihadis from outside areas have been deployed and a considerable section of them were teenagers (youth not more than 17 years old). Thousands of members of various organisations have been gathered through facebook and Whatsapp messages.
  • Sources say that Muslims from other states and from foreign countries too are seen across the state at various towns. Their behavioural characteristics are totally alien to the locals and they are made to stay in Mosques and Jamaths. Who are they, where have they come from and what for they have come, whether they carry valid travel permits and VISAs, have all to be examined and investigated.
  • The absolute cowardice, dubiousness and double standards of the pseudo secular political parties must also be noted. It is almost a week since the Ambur violence had taken place. But barring BJP, no other political party has had the courage to condemn the violence, only because of the reason that it was perpetrated by Muslims. This goes to show how self-centred they are and how concerned they are about the minority vote banks.
  • Self-styled and self-proclaimed Dalit champions like Thirumavalavan and Krishnasami, who run the so-called dalit parties and join hands with minorities to separate the dalits from the Hindu mainstream fold, have not had the guts to protest against the abduction of Pavithra. Just because the criminal was a Muslim they have remained mute without even bothering to meet her husband Palani. Their silence is deafening! They are prepared to beg Muslim votes even at the cost of their own brethren. This goes to show how the so-called dalit leaders are in the control of minority organisations and that they work as per the whims and fancies of minority organisations against the interest of the larger Hindu society.

Helpless Police Force

Some of the lower rank police personnel, preferring anonymity, have told some plain facts to the Tamil Daily ‘Dinamalar’ (dated 30.06.2015). The facts project a pathetic state of affairs in the state. Their confession is as follows:

“On 27th night we were only 800 personnel on duty. But those indulged in violence were not less than 6000 people. When Superintendent of Police Senthilkumari was attacked, we acted in defence and tried to stop it. The violent people pelted stones on us and attacked us with wooden logs. As we were less in number, we simply couldn’t do anything. We were forced to run for life. Many police women wept and cried out hile they were running for cover and security. The Muslims burnt down buses and other vehicles which came that way. They attacked the bus passengers. We had to remain as mute spectators for two reasons.

Firstly, we were instructed not to ‘Lathi Charge’ the violent men as the RK Nagar by-election (Where CM Jayalalitha was contesting) was going on, not to shoot down the perpetrators and to talk to them and pacify them. The higher authorities have told us, “You must take the blows but should not return them or retaliate”. So, we had to withdraw.

Secondly, we were very less in number. This must be the first instance in Tamil Nadu, in which, 54 police personnel have run away from the scene of violence after getting severely assaulted. We are ashamed of it. There was no mistake on our part; we had to abide by the orders of our superiors. After getting assaulted by the violent men, we had to take treatment at hospitals. Our superior officers came and met us at the hospital and consoled us. But they didn’t even enquire what happened and how we got hurt”.

The above confession by the Vellore police clearly establishes the present state of affairs in Tamil Nadu vis-à-vis Islamic extremism. The state police has become weak, spineless and it fears Islamic extremists. The same has been pointed out by Sri Ramagopalan, Founder President of Hindu Munnani, in his press statement, wherein he had warned the state government.

People of Tamil Nadu must understand the situation and act accordingly in the interest of their own safety and security.

Investigation handed over to CBCID

The Crime Branch CID (CBCID) has taken over the investigation as ordered by the government. It has taken Inspector Martin Prmraj into custody at an undisclosed place for interrogation. They have taken the investigation into four directions namely, Ambur, Violence, Pavithra’s abduction, Interrogation of Pallikonda police and death of Shameel Ahmed. Meanwhile TMMK Branch Secretary Sikandar (32), TMMK Town Secretary Imran (26), Iqbal (34) of Reddi Thoppu, Muneer (24) of Gaspah and Thauhath (24) were arrested. With this the number of arrested people has gone up to only 118.

Union Home Ministry’s move

The Union Home Ministry has asked the IB to investigate into the violence. Sleuths from IB have met the injured police personnel recuperating at Vellore and Ambur government hospitals. They have gathered some vital information such as (i) the attack was pre-planned by a fundamentalist outfit (ii) they have conducted 12 secret meetings in this connection which were funded by a few industrialists of Ambur and Vaniyambadi and (iii) the names of those important persons who have instigated the activists to indulge in violence.

Chief Minister must act NOW!

When the state fails to protect the police and security forces despite doing their duty, they naturally refrain from taking action against the fundamentalists and they even start fearing them. It would not augur well for the security of the state and the consequences would be disastrous.

During the ‘Vishwaroopam’ film episode the Chief Minister had admitted as follows: “Tamil Nadu Touheed Jamath is a huge organisation with more than 7 lac members must be taken into confidence and the issue must be negotiated with them, for it is also a pan-Indian organisation The government cannot afford to provide security for 524 cinema theatres, as we do not have enough strength in the police force.”

Then, when the jihadis indulged in a murder spree, killing half dozen and maiming scores of Hindu activists and leaders, the then Director General of police met the Chief Minister at her Kodanadu (Ooty) office cum residence and presumably as per her instructions came out with a detailed press statement. The statement said, “The Hindu activists were murdered due to money laundering, real estate issues and illicit relationships. This has got nothing to do with Jihadis.”

Later in the assembly, the Chief Minsiter stated, “Most of the criminals are first time offenders. Hence it would not be possible to gather intelligence inputs about them. Crimes cannot be eradicated totally, but could only be controlled”.

The Chief Minister who had made such statements on Islamic aggression and prevailing law and order situation in the state then, has not come out with even a word at all about the unprecedented violence which had occurred in Ambur. What is the reason for her silence? Is it not the duty of her government to clear the atmosphere of fear which has engulfed the state, especially since the formation of her government in 2011?

The Chief Minister owes not only an explanation to the people on the increasing Islamic aggression, but also immediate and necessary action to establish peace and harmony.
