Today is an important day. Yes 5 DEC is the Mahasamadhi day of Sri Aurobindo.

The reason why the cessation of bodily life of Sri Aurobindo is MAHASAMADHI is that from 5th December to 9th December, for 5 days his body was motionless odorless and away from decomposition.

On 9th December 1950, the body of Sri Aurobindo was finally kept inside the Samadhi in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram premises. He passed away, medically, on 5th December 1950. Many, including The Mother Herself, experienced a Supramental radiance from His Body from the 5th to the 8th of December 1950. On 9th December The Mother again came and saw the body and gave her final announcement to bury the body of Sri Aurobindo. She was convinced Sri Aurobindo left the mortal frame.

One of the disciples, Dara (Aga Syed Ibrahim), who paid his homage to Sri Aurobindo on the 5th December, stated : “I found myself in Sri Aurobindo’s own room by the side of his cot. He seemed so peaceful and happy, and the flesh shone with a new luster which I failed to see at the daŕsan time on 24th November. Why could I not see it before?... I could not take my eyes off his face and arms. It seemed to me he was alive. It was certain that he was in a condition of a deep and upward soaring trance just then.

Sri Aurobindo was not a saint; Sri Aurobindo was not just a spiritualist; Sri Aurobindo was not a political revolutionary.

Sri Aurobindo was an adventure of consciousness. He synthesized the spirit of Advaita & Vaishanaviam to embark on new path called ‘INTEGRAL YOGA’  ALL LIFE IS YOGA“ says Sri Aurobindo. His spiritualism does not exclude material life as something to be despised or recommend ascetic withdrawal to lead a secluded monistic life. His approach is inclusive and He recommends spiritualizing everything mundane and menial for Divine Glory to manifest.

It is with this zest He viewed INDIA alias Bharath DeshIndia of the ages is not dead nor has she spoken her last creative word; she lives and has still something to do for herself and the human peoples. And that which must seek now to awake is not an anglicised oriental people, docile pupil of the West and doomed to repeat the cycle of the occident's success and failure, but still the ancient immemorable Shakti recovering her deepest self, lifting her head higher towards the supreme source of light and strength and turning to discover the complete meaning and a vaster form of her Dharma’’

To Sri Aurobindo, India is not just a piece of land, not merely a collection of people. It is a conscious Spiritual Being, a Divine Power, a Shakti, Devi, Goddess. India is Mother India, a living form of the Divine Mother. India must be free from foreign control, for only then could she develop and manifest the greatness of her soul. 'Love India', Sri Aurobindo urged our men, 'serve her, sacrifice all for her, so that she may be free.'

In his prophetic words Sri Aurobindo clearly says the partition of our motherland will go; He did not at all agree to Congress’s submission to brute force’s demand of dividing the country; because to Sri Aurobindo our motherland is not a piece of land on earth. It is Devta.

So he stoutly denounced the idea of dividing the country again like partition of Bengal for British convenience.

In His message through AIR Puducherry on AUGUST 15 1947, on the partition of India He declared, “India is free but she has not achieved unity, only a fissured and broken freedom. At one time it almost seemed as if she might relapse into the chaos of separate States which preceded the British conquest. Fortunately there has now developed a strong possibility that this disastrous relapse will be avoided. The wisely drastic policy of the Constituent Assembly makes it possible that the problem of the depressed classes will be solved without schism or fissure. But the old communal division into Hindu and Muslim seems to have hardened into the figure of a permanent political division of the country. It is to be hoped that the Congress and the nation will not accept the settled fact as for ever settled or as anything more than a temporary expedient. For if it lasts, India may be seriously weakened, even crippled: civil strife may remain always possible, possible even a new invasion and foreign conquest. The partition of the country must go, —it is to be hoped by a slackening of tension, by a progressive understanding of the need of peace and concord, by the constant necessity of common and concerted action, even of an instrument of union for that purpose. In this way unity may come about under whatever form — the exact form may have a pragmatic but not a fundamental importance. But by whatever means, the division must and will go. For without it the destiny of India might be seriously impaired and even frustrated. But that must not be.”

What a prophetic saying!

That is why in Sri Aurobindo one can even today find the map of AKHAND BHARATH as "SPIRITUAL MAP"‘of INDIA.

Sri Aurobindo clearly stated that Bharath will annex its lost territories.

We must bear in mind it was Sri Aurobindo who gave mantric effet to the slogan "VANDHE MATARAM" and indeed Vandhe Mataram even today remains anchor for patriots.

On this special day let us live up to the expectation of Sri Aurobindo’s desire of revitalizing our nation on the basis of Vedic Wisdom.
